Newberry Opera House Gears Up for 26th Season with Exciting Changes

NEWBERRY — The Newberry Opera House is set to embark on its 26th season, and it’s making sure to catch the community’s attention with a series of upgrades that promise to enhance the experience for all visitors. Executive Director Anne Pinckney Smith shared that while the venue will keep its beloved appearance, a much-needed refresh is underway to address years of wear and tear.

Improvements for All

One of the key focus areas of the upgrades is to ensure the venue is accessible to everyone. Smith pointed out, “You didn’t really have big, motorized wheelchairs 25 years ago, so we wanted to make it more easily maneuverable.” This includes features such as ADA-compliant bathrooms that are at the right height, which aims to create a better overall experience for all patrons.

In addition to accessibility improvements, there will be significant upgrades in sound and lighting to enhance performances. Smith also mentioned a diverse lineup of acts aimed at bridging the gap between generations, saying, “We try to nod to the past with acts like Chubby Checker and Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder. We want to encourage the new, younger generation to come.” This blend of old and new is meant to refresh the Opera House while honoring its storied history.

A Community Affair

To celebrate these changes, the Newberry Opera House will welcome visitors to a preview party on September 13, giving the community a chance to see firsthand the efforts made over the past few months. Scheduled to start at 6 p.m., tickets for this exciting event can be purchased directly from the Opera House’s official website. Following the preview party, guided tours will be available on September 14, allowing attendees to explore the venue’s up-to-date features and enjoy the local ambiance.

Smith encourages guests to make the most of their visit by exploring dining and shopping options in downtown Newberry before or after attending a show. “It’s just a different experience,” she noted, expressing excitement for the upcoming season.

Looking Ahead

As the Opera House prepares for its official season opening, it will resume normal operating hours. The venue will be open from Tuesday to Saturday, providing a wide variety of shows and events that cater to the interests of all ages. “We’re just looking forward to a wide variety of something for everybody,” Smith shared enthusiastically.
