Exciting Times in Newberry, SC: Road Repairs and New Businesses Coming Your Way

Newberry, SC, is buzzing with energy these days, and there’s a lot to talk about! If you’ve driven down Main Street recently, you’ll notice that it has been newly repaved and is looking better than ever. It’s smooth sailing for drivers, as this main artery of the community is in excellent condition.

But that’s not all! The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) has rolled out plans for even more road improvements for Newberry County. In 2024, look forward to the 34-Bypass being repaved from Wilson Road to Nance Street. Also on the list is a refresh for Highway #121, which will be repaved from I-26 to Highway #176. Other roads getting some attention include Highway #39 in Chappells, Highway #66 in Whitmire, and several local roads like Clara Brown Road, Island Ford Road, New Hope Road, and Mount Bethel Garmany Road near the interstate.

In addition to these updates, the County Transportation Committee is planning to repave several urban streets by June 2025. This list includes Glenn Street (from Evans through Kate), Drayton Street (from Boundary to Milligan), and parts of Center, Hill, Lindsay, Luther, Morgan, Reid, and South Streets. Plus, we can expect the Boundary Street Bridge replacement project to wrap up by early fall, bringing even better connectivity to the area.

On top of all this, there’s major action on I-26, with construction aimed at widening the road from Little Mountain to Irmo, expected to be completed in winter 2024. Just a heads up! Starting April 15, 2024, I-26 east will be reduced to one lane from Joanna to Little Mountain, so keep your eyes peeled for detour signs directing you to Highway 76. And yes, two bridges crossing I-26 will also be undergoing construction for about a month.
