Newberry, SC – A Day of Weather Wonders at Reuben Elementary
What a delightful day it was in Newberry, South Carolina, as the 3rd graders at Reuben Elementary School experienced a special visit from a weather expert! The Chief Meteorologist brought along the WACH FOX Weather School to engage the young minds in an intriguing conversation about all things weather. The students were brimming with enthusiasm and were eager to learn about powerful storms, fascinating cloud formations, and, of course, the mysteries of hail!
Curiosity Takes Flight
As soon as the weather expert stepped into the classroom, a wave of excitement swept over the students. With curious eyes and raised hands, they peppered him with questions that any meteorologist would be thrilled to answer. Some of the questions included:
– “Would baseball size hail hurt you?”
– “Should you go in a ditch if a tornado is coming for you?”
– “What should you do if a category 5 hurricane is coming toward your house?”
Each question opened the door to a deeper understanding of the fascinating world of weather. It’s not every day that 3rd graders get to have such important questions about safety and meteorological phenomena answered by an expert!
Understanding the Basics
Throughout the visit, the Chief Meteorologist took the time to explain the science behind tornadoes, hurricanes, and hail formation in a way that was engaging and easy to understand for the young students. He illustrated how warm and cold air come together to create storms, and how specific conditions can lead to the formation of hail, tornadoes, and even hurricanes.
For example, when discussing hail, he shared that hailstones form in thunderstorms when supercooled water droplets freeze around small particles, building layers as they are pushed upward and downward by strong winds. The larger they grow, the greater the chance that they could cause damage – and yes, baseball-size hail can indeed hurt if it lands on you!
Safety First
As the conversation turned towards safety, the meteorologist emphasized the importance of knowing what to do in various severe weather situations. When a tornado approaches, seeking shelter in a sturdy building is vital, while finding a ditch can be a last resort if there’s no safe place nearby. He reassured the students that planning ahead is essential for staying safe during severe weather events.
In the case of hurricanes, he discussed the seriousness of being prepared well in advance, including having a disaster kit ready and knowing evacuation routes. The children listened attentively and took all the information to heart.
