Newberry Starbucks Baristas Unite for Worker Rights in Historic Union Vote

Newberry Workers Unite: Starbucks Baristas Join Together for Better Protections

In the small but spirited town of Newberry, South Carolina, baristas at the local Starbucks are buzzing with excitement after a significant win for their rights at work. On Monday, these dedicated workers voted to join the rapidly growing union movement by aligning with Starbucks Workers United. This union represents more than 440 Starbucks stores and over 10,000 workers across the United States, making this a noteworthy achievement.

A Growing Trend in South Carolina

The Newberry location marks a big step forward, becoming the sixth Starbucks in South Carolina to unionize. This milestone is a part of a larger national trend that has seen a surge in unions forming across the country, with workers standing up for their rights and voicing concerns about workplace conditions. In fact, Newberry’s decision comes on the heels of other successful campaigns, including a previous unionization effort at a Starbucks on Millwood Avenue in Columbia, which became the state’s third unionized shop back in the summer of 2022.

Voices of Change

Chesney Bolton, who has been a shift supervisor at Starbucks for three years, expressed her excitement following the vote. She said, “We are so excited to be making a change for not only our future but for future partners as well. What a great victory for a small southern town. I’m thrilled we could all come together and make this change for the better. We are excited to join the bargaining and to see what happens next.” The enthusiasm among the staff is palpable, with hopes of improved conditions and stronger representation at the forefront of their agenda.

Understanding the Workers’ Needs

The drive to unionize has often stemmed from genuine concerns regarding workplace conditions. At the Columbia Starbucks, workers voiced grievances about a lack of non-cash tipping options, insufficient staffing per shift, and the absence of seniority pay. The Newberry workers are joining a larger movement that emphasizes justice at work, which includes respect, living wages, racial and gender equity, and fair scheduling.

A National Movement

This unionization wave is part of a nationwide campaign that has seen over 430 Starbucks locations across 43 states decide to unionize since 2021. This impressive number is touted as “more than any other company in the 21st Century.” The growth can be attributed to the power of peer-to-peer organizing, led by workers who support each other in advocating for their rights.

Support from Across the Nation

Alongside South Carolina, workers from other states such as California, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Oregon, and Pennsylvania have also recently joined the national union. These efforts reflect a broader desire among service workers for meaningful change in their workplaces and for basic rights that ensure their dignity and safety while on the job.

Eyes on the Future

As the Newberry workers embark on this new journey with Starbucks Workers United, the outlook is hopeful. They are enthusiastic about joining the bargaining table and advocating for their collective needs. The victory in Newberry might just inspire a wave of change throughout the service industry, proving that in unity lies strength.

With this growing momentum across various Starbucks locations, it’s clear that the conversation about workers’ rights is just beginning and many are eager to see what the future holds. As more workers join the union, they hope to create a safe, fair, and empowering workplace for everyone involved.
