The womenโ€™s team celebrated a thrilling 4-3 victory after bouncing back from a poor start, while the men struggled, suffering a 0-4 defeat. As the teams gear up for their next challenge, they are eager to build on their experiences and improve.

Newberry, a Town of Triumph and Challenges in Tennis

This past week was a rollercoaster of emotions for the Newberry Wolves tennis teams as the women celebrated a heart-pounding 4-3 victory against Anderson University, while the men faced a tough loss of 0-4 in their match. Letโ€™s dive into the exciting moments that unfolded on the courts!

Womenโ€™s Team Steals the Show

The spotlight shone brightly on the Newberry Wolves womenโ€™s tennis team as they rallied after losing the doubles point. Although they started their day on a shaky note, losing the first two doubles matches, the Wolves roared back in singles play, showcasing their skill and determination.

In doubles, things didnโ€™t go as planned for Newberry. The first pair, Emma Arnal and Renee Dorval, fell to Andersonโ€™s G. Weaver and G. Sompayrac with a score of 6-1. Not far behind, Margarita Roshka and Alexa Gamborino-Suarez lost their match against V. Borda and A. Braithwaite, with a score of 6-3. The final doubles match featuring Lina Sarhan and Aina Miralles against E. Ronconi and M. Opre was left unfinished, with the score at 5-3 in favor of Anderson.

However, the women didnโ€™t let this setback dampen their spirits! They charged into singles play with a fierce determination. Aina Miralles led the charge, winning decisively against E. Ronconi with scores of 6-1 and 6-0, giving Newberry their first point of the match. Following her lead, Renee Dorval also secured a win, defeating E. Collins with a score of 6-4, 6-2.

As the tension mounted, Lina Sarhan tied the match at 3-3 by clinching her match against M. Opre, winning 6-3 and pulling off a nail-biting 7-6 victory in the tie-breaker. The final act was nothing short of dramatic as Margarita Roshka, down a set, staged a spectacular comeback to win against G. Sompayrac, with final scores of 3-6, 6-1, and 6-3. With that victory, Newberry led the match to a triumphant conclusion, stealing a well-deserved win!

Menโ€™s Team Faces Tough Challenge

Newberry Wolves menโ€™s tennis team faced a challenging outing against Anderson University, resulting in a disappointing 0-4 loss. Similar to their female counterparts, the men started strong but couldnโ€™t find their rhythm in the doubles matches.

In doubles competition, Anderson quickly gained momentum, with matches unfolding in their favor. Joshua Fritz and Gabriel Fernandez-Iglesias couldnโ€™t secure a win; they lost 6-2 to M. Collignon and S. Thauornchaisophon. Another pair, Lucas Mruk and Noel Bartz, also faced defeat against P. Cronin and V. Mico-Fellonar, going down with a score of 6-2. Meanwhile, a match featuring David Negzaoui and James Vincent against W. Shioi and J. Lucas was halted at 4-5.

Moving into singles, James Vincent managed to snag a point for Newberry with a hard-fought victory of 6-4, 6-3. Unfortunately, the day proved to be rough for some of his teammates. Daniel Watson lost 6-4, 6-0 to Rufus Plane, while Gabriel Fernandez-Iglesias fell in a close match, losing 5-7, 3-6, and Lucas Mruk suffered a loss of 6-2, 6-4.

As if that wasnโ€™t enough, three singles matches were left unfinished, with James Vincent battling to a tough 4-6, 2-2 score, while David Negzaoui was in a tight match at 7-5, 4-5. Noel Bartz was leading at 6-1, 5-5 when play ceased, leaving fans on the edge of their seats!

Looking Ahead

Both teams are now gearing up for their next challenge with a road match against UVA Wise on Saturday. With confidence from the womenโ€™s recent victory and lessons learned from the menโ€™s match, the Wolves will surely be giving it their all!

Stay tuned as Newberryโ€™s tennis teams continue to chase victory on the courts! Who knows what the next matches will bring!
