The Newberry Wolves had an action-packed weekend, excelling in various sports from track and field to tennis. Tyler Shumate set a college record in the men’s 600m, while Rahyme Christian dominated the men’s 60m hurdles. The women’s tennis team secured a strong victory against Francis Marion, and the Wolves showcased their talents in their inaugural Acrobatics & Tumbling competition. Despite challenges faced by the softball team at the Embry-Riddle Tournament, the Wolves display resilience and skill as they prepare for upcoming competitions.
This past weekend was nothing short of explosive for the Newberry Wolves as they showcased their talents in various sports disciplines. From track and field to tennis, along with their thrilling debut in Acrobatics & Tumbling, the Wolves didn’t hold back!
The Wolves shined brightly at the Carolina Challenge with some remarkable performances that will be remembered for years to come. Highlighting the day was Tyler Shumate, who set a Newberry College record in the men’s 600m by clocking an impressive time of 1:55.6. This stellar feat earned him a 6th place finish and placed him at 96th nationally in Division II.
And if that wasn’t enough excitement, Rahyme Christian put his competition into a tailspin in the men’s 60m hurdles. He dazzled crowds by winning both the prelims with a time of 8.10 seconds and the finals at 8.02 seconds, marking a season best.
Another standout was Tavarian Thompson, who shattered his personal record in the men’s 600m, finishing in 3rd place with a swift time of 1:24.14. The women’s events were equally thrilling, with Isabel Fraup jumping to a commendable 3rd place in the high jump by clearing a height of 1.58m.
The excitement didn’t stop there. The men’s 4x400m relay team, composed of Shamar Brown, Tavarian Thompson, Ja Narris Hillman, and Justin Canty, teamed up to achieve a season best time of 3:23.26—ranking at 64th in Division II. Meanwhile, Meah Jackson sealed her own success with a personal record in the women’s long jump, landing a solid jump of 5.34m for a 7th place finish. Let’s also not forget Irma Watson-Perez, who secured 3rd in the women’s weight throw with a solid mark of 15.21m.
The Wolves are set to continue their momentum on February 13th at the JDL College Team Challenge in Winston-Salem, NC!
On the flip side, the men’s tennis team battled hard but fell short in a tight contest against their rivals, ending with a 5-2 score. Noteworthy performances came from James Vincent and Daniel Watson, who both showcased impressive comebacks despite their team loss.
In a lovely gesture, Newberry College also celebrated the 2025 National Girls & Women in Sports Day during their Acrobatics & Tumbling debut, highlighting their commitment to women’s sports.
Coming up next for the softball team is a doubleheader against UNC Pembroke on February 14th. There’s plenty of action and excitement ahead for the Wolves, and we can’t wait to see what they’ll achieve next!
