The Newberry Wolves hit the track running this past weekend at the USC Invite, leaving everyone talking about their remarkable performances in a highly competitive atmosphere. Athletes pulled out all the stops, showcasing their talent, hard work, and determination on an impressive stage.
Fast Times in the Sprints
On the men’s side, Jamari Bennett blazed through the 60m dash with a phenomenal time of 7.02 seconds, earning himself a solid 14th place overall. That’s not all, as fellow athlete Ja Narris Hillman pushed himself to new heights, securing a personal best of 7.09 seconds. It’s amazing to see such growth!
Meanwhile, on the women’s team, things were equally thrilling. Leiyana Rose clocked in at 8.09 seconds in the 60m dash, and just behind her came Meah Jackson, finishing strong at 8.13 seconds. These speedy runs set a positive tone for the day!
Racing and Relays
Transitioning to the men’s 200m dash, the excitement continued as Shamar Brown set a personal record with a time of 22.29 seconds, landing him in 13th place. Jamari Bennett again shone brightly, finishing with a time of 23.01 seconds. Their performances paved the way for a thrilling competition!
When it came to the women’s 200m dash, Nia Quimby didn’t disappoint either, registering a season-best of 27.51 seconds. The athletes were certainly on fire across the board!
Strength in the Endurance Events
In the men’s 400m, Shamar Brown continued to demonstrate his prowess with a time of 49.70 seconds, claiming the 9th spot. Following him, Kalvin Tobias crossed the finish line in 51.70 seconds, while Nehemiah Smith rounded things off with a time of 52.33 seconds. What an impressive showing from the team!
On the women’s side of things, Kamryn Adderton (1:01.65) and Brittany Montgomery (1:02.01) also managed to set personal records in their race. The momentum just kept building all day!
Strides in the 800m and Beyond
Leading the men’s 800m, Tyler Shumate finished in a commendable 1:55.40, securing 11th place overall. Adding to the excitement, Braylon Reier achieved a personal best in the men’s 3,000m with a time of 9:46.18, showcasing the depth of talent in the team.
Others like Ruby Hansen and Kayleigh Geel, athletes in the women’s 800m, held their ground well with times of 2:28.92 and 2:30.81 respectively.
Jumping to New Heights
The high jump event saw Jeffrey Jackson take a 7th place finish with a clearance of 1.85m (6’0.75”) for the men. Meanwhile, Isabel Farup seized the spotlight for the women, securing a fantastic 2nd place with her jump of 1.56m (5’1.25”). Personal records in high jump were also set by Kierra Gordon (1.51m) and Jameria Davis (1.46m).
Throwing Success
The throws were equally exhilarating. Irma Watson-Perez grabbed 1st place in the women’s weight throw, tossing an impressive 18.07m (59’3.50”), which places her nationally at 22nd in Division II. Walker Flores also hit a personal best with his throw at 14.81m (48’7.25”). Great job, team!
Team Relay Excitement
The men’s 4x400m relay team — comprising Tobias, Shumate, Scott, and Thompson — finished in an admirable 3rd place with a time of 3:26.89. The women followed suit, as their relay team, consisting of Montgomery, Adderton, Quimby, and Dionisio, secured a 4th place finish with a time of 4:04.87.
Newberry’s men’s Distance Medley Relay team also put forth a strong effort, finishing 4th with a time of 10:55.23, while the women’s team achieved a strong 3rd place with a time of 13:33.77. This was a day filled with achievements!
Next Up for the Wolves
With the USC Invite behind them, the Wolves are gearing up for their next challenge, the South Atlantic Conference Indoor Championships, set to take place on March 1st in Winston-Salem, NC. With such an impressive showing at the invite, we’re excited to see what they’ll bring to the championships!
