This game also brought a change in the quarterback position as head coach Brent Venables benched first-year passer Michael Hawkins Jr. after a shaky start, opting instead for sophomore Jackson Arnold. Once Arnold entered the game to stop the bleeding, he completed 18 of his 36 passes for 225 yards and a touchdown. His biggest highlight came during the second half when he connected with Brenen Thompson for a 54-yard touchdown. However, Arnold faced intense pressure, being sacked eight times throughout the game, contributing to a collective performance that saw Oklahoma fail to surpass 300 total yards of offense. This game marked Oklahoma being held under 10 points for consecutive games, a feat not seen since 1998.
With the upcoming schedule, Oklahoma faces further tests against ranked SEC opponents. Next week, they travel to No. 18 Ole Miss, and other challenging fixtures include No. 19 Missouri, No. 7 Alabama, and No. 8 LSU. The only respite comes when Maine visits on November 2, providing a brief moment of recovery before the program plunges into a demanding stretch.
Following the loss, Venables addressed the team’s performance, stating, “What we put out there today as a football team is nothing remotely close to the standard here at the University of Oklahoma.” He emphasized the need for improvement and a return to form as they aim to regroup amidst the mounting pressure of the SEC competition. The severity of their current situation is underscored by the need for larger changes, particularly at the quarterback position, which remains uncertain moving forward.
