Just minutes into the game, Texas was leading 14-3, leading many to believe they were on their way to yet another blowout, especially since Arizona State entered the game as 13 ½-point underdogs.

But just when folks thought the match was decided, things took a turn. Arizona State came out swinging, though they had quite the uphill battle. The Sun Devils managed to hold onto the ball significantly longer than Texas, almost three times more to be precise, but kept running into roadblocks when it mattered. Despite making it close a few times, they couldn’t convert their drives into touchdowns, only managing to score three points through the first three quarters. This led to an intense fourth quarter that would change everything.

Enter Cam Skattebo: The Folk Hero

It wasn’t until the fourth quarter that Cam Skattebo, the Sun Devils’ star running back, stepped into the spotlight. Remember that he finished fifth in this year’s Heisman voting? The guy showcased skills that could make any highlight reel. As Texas appeared to be pulling further ahead with a score of 24-8, Skattebo had different ideas. In an incredible display, he orchestrated an impressive comeback. Not only did he throw a 42-yard touchdown pass to his teammate, but he also managed to up the ante by rushing for a staggering 62 yards on the next drive.

With a series of mind-bending plays, he led Arizona State to equalize at 24-24, shocking the Longhorns and turning the tide of the game.

Final Seconds: Tension Rises

As the clock wound down, Texas had one final chance to win it. They advanced the ball deep into Sun Devils territory, setting up a 38-yard field goal attempt. Everyone held their breath—only to see the kick bounce off the left upright, sending the game into overtime. Fans were absolutely on fire as excitement electrified the atmosphere!

Overtime: A Battle of Wits

When overtime kicked in, Arizona State seemed to have that spark, with quarterback Sam Leavitt making some great plays. They found themselves ahead 31-24 after Skattebo punched it in for yet another touchdown. But the Longhorns weren’t about to throw in the towel. Down by seven, they quickly engineered their very own touchdown to keep their hopes alive for a second overtime. They finally got it done with a 28-yard touchdown to Matthew Golden, resetting the score at 31-31.

However, it was in that second overtime when Texas showed their grit. Ewers connected with Gunnar Helm for a 25-yard touchdown, and just like that, Texas led 39-31. Arizona State’s final push ended in heartbreak as they were intercepted, sealing the fate of their thrilling campaign.

This Peach Bowl was a rollercoaster of emotions, revealing that records and stats often hold less sway once the whistle blows. The season Arizona State had was phenomenal, highlighting the unpredictability of college football and showcasing emerging stars like Skattebo.

As Texas gears up to face Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl on January 10, they carry experience from this nail-biter.
