Rock Hill Triumphs in State Championship Showdown

Rock Hill, SC – December 7, 2023

The Northwestern Trojans emerged victorious against the Gaffney Indians, securing a place in the state championship game with a dramatic 58-40 win in the Upper State championship of the South Carolina 5A Division II football bracket. The game, held at District 3 Stadium, showcased a fierce rivalry as the Trojans pushed their record to 13-0 for the season.

Game Highlights and Player Performances

In a back-and-forth contest that kept spectators on the edge of their seats, the Trojans not only displayed impressive offensive prowess but also strong defensive plays. Most notably, senior defensive lineman Mason Grier made a crucial interception in the fourth quarter, shifting the momentum firmly in favor of Northwestern.

Despite a tough challenge from Gaffney, who entered the match with a record of 10-2, Northwestern maintained their unbeaten status. The game was particularly lively with both teams trading touchdowns throughout the first three quarters, demonstrating their tenacity and skill on the field.

Leading the charge for Northwestern was senior quarterback Finley Polk, who connected with wide receivers Kameron Vance and Daniel Caldwell for significant touchdown passes. Polk also contributed to the score with a touchdown run, showcasing his versatility and critical role within the team.

First Half Drama

The offensive duel began with Gaffney setting the tone, scoring a touchdown early in the game. Receiver Jamarcus Smith demonstrated agility with a ten-yard touchdown rush, followed by a rejected two-point conversion attempt by Northwestern’s defense.

Northwestern’s senior kicker, Matthew Fish, who is considered one of the top kickers in South Carolina, was pivotal in keeping the score close with three field goals. The game stood at a surprising 6-6 until the action escalated, with Gaffney taking the lead through a stunning 43-yard touchdown rush from sophomore Kendaris Bailey.

As the half progressed, the Trojans responded. After recovering an onside kick, Polk led his team down the field, culminating in a seven-yard rushing touchdown. The first half concluded with Northwestern ahead 27-18, a result of momentum and aggressive play.

Second Half High-Tension Play

As the second half commenced, Gaffney’s resilience was apparent. They capitalized on a 50-yard touchdown pass, narrowing the lead and ramping up the intensity. However, Northwestern answered back with a strategic field goal and another touchdown catch from Caldwell.

Northwestern’s coach, Page Wofford, credited the team’s ability to stay calm amidst the adversities faced during the game. “The message was to keep playing and not let up,” Wofford stated regarding their second-half strategy.

Looking Ahead

With this win, Northwestern is set to face off against Irmo, who defeated White Knoll in their semifinal match. The state championship is scheduled for 6 p.m. next Saturday, December 14, at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium in Orangeburg, SC. The Trojans aim to continue their winning streak and secure the state title.

Both teams delivered an exhilarating game, highlighting the rich competitive spirit prevalent in South Carolina high school football. As the season nears its finale, all eyes will be on the Trojans as they prepare for their next formidable challenge.
