Newberry, South Carolina is buzzing with excitement as Samsung continues to grow its foothold in the area! Since opening its first U.S. home appliance manufacturing facility back in 2017, Samsung has now poured nearly $500 million into its Newberry County plant. Interesting enough, this total even surpassed the originally planned investment of $380 million! Talk about a great commitment to the community!
One of the most remarkable aspects of Samsung’s expansion is its impact on local employment. Since celebrating the grand opening of its facility in 2018, Samsung has onboarded over 1,500 employees from Newberry and neighboring counties. In light of this positive growth, Thomas Komaromi, the general counsel of Samsung Electronics Home Appliances America, expressed his enthusiasm: “We are so excited to grow our initial investment in Newberry County and the state of South Carolina.” His words reflect the genuine gratitude Samsung feels towards the community that has embraced them.
Situated within a 450,000-square-foot facility that once housed a Caterpillar plant, Samsung’s operation is nothing short of impressive. Here, a significant component of their production is focused on washing machines. The facility underwent expansions to add 151,000 square feet to its existing structure and set up two manufacturing and assembly lines equipped with 20 presses and 30 injection molding machines.
When the Newberry facility opened its doors, Samsung set ambitious goals. They aimed to produce 1 million washing machines in their first year of manufacturing in 2018 and to hire 954 employees by 2020. As it turns out, they blew right past those goals, having produced over 4 million washing machines that have since been distributed across the United States. What a success story!
As Samsung looks to the future, they remain committed to fostering a strong relationship with the Newberry community. The investments made not only enhance production capabilities but also play a vital role in shaping the local economy. The sentiment shared by Samsung’s leadership underlines that they foresee a bright future of working together with the community to continue creating innovative home appliances that meet the needs of families across the nation.
Local residents have undoubtedly felt the ripple effect of Samsung’s presence. Shops, restaurants, and services in the vicinity are likely benefiting from the increased foot traffic and spending power of the newly hired employees who now call Newberry home. It’s an exciting time for all involved!
In a world where large corporations often seem distant, Samsung’s action in Newberry serves as a reminder that investment can lead to real-world, positive change. From expanding facilities, boosting local employment, and promoting community ties, Samsung’s efforts demonstrate how a thriving business can be a rewarding neighbor. We can’t wait to see what the next chapter holds for Samsung, the city of Newberry, and what amazing appliances will be developed in the years to come!
