Newberry Mother and Son Killed in Early Morning Interstate Accident; Community Mourns Loss

Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Newberry Mother and Son

CHAPIN, S.C. – A tragic accident early Thursday morning on Interstate 26 has resulted in the deaths of a mother and her young son, causing shock and sorrow in the local community.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:45 a.m. near the intersection of Columbia Avenue and Peak Street in Chapin, according to reports from the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The victims, identified as 47-year-old LaRhonda Davis Gibson and her 23-month-old son, Ketron Menteze Gibson Jr., were both residents of Newberry.

According to the highway patrol’s preliminary investigation, LaRhonda was driving a sedan and had slowed her vehicle due to oncoming traffic. At this point, a pickup truck collided with the rear of her car, propelling it forward into the back of a tractor-trailer ahead. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, but both LaRhonda and her son were pronounced dead on arrival by the Lexington County Coroner’s Office.

Details of the Incident

The crash caused significant traffic delays on I-26 as authorities worked to clear the area. Two individuals from the pickup truck sustained injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The exact nature of their injuries has not been disclosed.

Traffic congestion was reported as far back as Bush River Road and Leaphart Road, affecting many early morning commuters. Investigations are ongoing, with both the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office looking into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.

Community Reacts to the Loss

The news of the accident has spread quickly through Newberry and surrounding areas, leaving many heartbroken. Family friends and local residents expressed their shock and grief over the loss of LaRhonda and her young son. Classified as a loving mother and vibrant member of the community, LaRhonda’s absence will be deeply felt among her peers and loved ones.

Local leaders have also shared their condolences. Many are calling for community support and awareness regarding road safety, especially in light of this tragedy. “It’s absolutely devastating,” one community member stated. “LaRhonda and her son were so loved. We cannot imagine the pain this has caused their family.”

Investigation and Charges

As the investigation continues, no charges have been filed against any parties as of yet. Authorities are working meticulously to gather all facts and details before concluding their findings. The South Carolina Highway Patrol has urged For anyone with information regarding the accident to come forward.

Statistically, rear-end collisions are a common occurrence on highways, often caused by distracted or speeding drivers. This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of maintaining a safe distance and attentiveness while driving.

Support and Resources

Support services are available for those affected by the tragedy. Fairfield County will host community meetings to address safety measures and offer counseling for families struggling with grief over this incident.

As the community comes to terms with the reality of this event, they remember the lives lost and rally together to support the family left behind. The loss of LaRhonda and Ketron has touched many hearts, inspiring calls for prayers and support during this challenging time.

For now, the southbound lanes of I-26 have reopened, but the road ahead for the Newberry community will be long as they grapple with this profound loss.
