NEWBERRY, SC – It’s an incredibly sad day for the Newberry community as we learn of a devastating car accident that has left two lives lost. The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has officially released the names of the victims from the crash that occurred early Thursday morning.
The lovely LaRhonda Davis Gibson, just 47 years old, and her precious 23-month-old son, Ketron Menteze Gibson Jr., both from Newberry, were tragically pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. This news has sent shockwaves through the community, as LaRhonda and her little boy were beloved members of their neighborhood.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the unfortunate event unfolded around 2:45 a.m. near mile marker 90, close to the lines dividing Newberry and Lexington counties. It seems that LaRhonda’s car had slowed down as she approached oncoming traffic when a pick-up truck crashed into the back of her vehicle. This jolt sent her car crashing into the back of a tractor-trailer in front of her.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was reported to have escaped without any injuries and stayed on the scene to help. However, two people in the pick-up truck were taken to a nearby hospital with injuries, and our hearts go out to them as they recover.
This tragic incident led to the closure of all westbound lanes on Interstate 26 West for more than seven hours. Drivers were rerouted as emergency personnel worked diligently to clear the scene and conduct their investigations. Traffic finally resumed its usual flow with the reopening of the westbound lanes around 10:15 a.m. Thursday morning, but not without leaving a mark on all who witnessed or heard of this terrible occurrence.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is currently investigating the accident as they work to piece together the exact circumstances that led to this heartbreaking loss.
The loss of LaRhonda and young Ketron has left friends, family, and the entire Newberry community in mourning. Many from the area have taken to social media to express their condolences and share memories, honoring the lives of those lost. It’s moments like these that remind us of the fragility of life and the bonds we share in our communities.
LaRhonda was lively, engaging, and was known for putting a smile on everyone’s face. Her son, so young, had a whole bright future ahead of him. It’s hard for all who knew them to come to grips with this sorrowful event.
As the investigation continues, many are already asking how they can help LaRhonda’s family during this incredibly difficult time. Local organizations may step up to lend a hand, and anyone wishing to support the family can consider reaching out to local charity groups who are often first responders in these tough situations.
In the meantime, we encourage everyone to take a moment to appreciate your loved ones—this tragedy has shown us that nothing should be taken for granted. Keep an eye out for each other and drive safely as you travel the roads.
The community will be healing from this incident, and together we can support one another. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Gibson family and all those affected as we navigate through this period of grief.
