Newberry, SC – A pedestrian lost their life in a tragic accident that occurred just outside the city on Wednesday night. The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) reported that the incident happened around 10 p.m. on Bush River Road, specifically at the intersection of Kendall Road.
According to the SCHP, a 2018 Chevrolet Impala was traveling west on Bush River Road when it struck a pedestrian who was walking along the road. There were two individuals inside the Impala, both of whom fortunately emerged from the accident unharmed.
Emergency personnel arrived on the scene quickly, but sadly, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the location of the crash. At this time, the identity of the deceased has not been released, and authorities are working to notify their family.
The SCHP has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. They are assessing various factors, including the time of night and visibility conditions, to determine what led to this unfortunate event.
The roadway where the accident occurred is known for its traffic, and this incident has raised concerns about pedestrian safety in the area. Community members are understandably shaken by the news and are calling for discussions about making roads safer for everyone.
Local residents expressed their sadness and concern following the accident. Many voiced their opinions on social media, sharing condolences and urging drivers to be more cautious, especially when driving at night. One resident remarked, “We need to be more aware. It’s tragic that a life was lost over something that could have been prevented.”
Another resident highlighted the need for better lighting and crosswalks in the busy areas of Newberry, especially in places where pedestrians are likely to be walking.
This incident is not the first of its kind in Newberry or other parts of South Carolina. In recent years, the state has seen similar pedestrian accidents that have raised alarms about traffic safety for both drivers and walkers. Many are advocating for more educational programs about safe driving and walking practices, particularly in neighborhoods that see a lot of foot traffic.
The SCHP is expected to provide updates as the investigation progresses. They encourage anyone who may have witnessed the accident or have additional information to reach out to them. It’s important for the community to come together and support each other during this difficult time, especially for those affected by such devastating events.
As more information becomes available regarding the pedestrian involved and the outcome of the investigation, residents of Newberry hope that this incident will prompt changes that lead to a safer environment for all.
In the meanwhile, local officials are encouraging drivers to remain vigilant and responsible on the roads, particularly as summer approaches and more people are out enjoying the warm weather.
