High School Fall Sports Get Off to a Thrilling Start in Vermont

Vermont City kicked off the 2024 high school fall sports season with plenty of action across various sports, including soccer, field hockey, volleyball, golf, and cross-country running. Schools and players made their marks, showcasing impressive skills on the field and in the gym. Below are some highlights from recent games.

Soccer Highlights

The Rice soccer team exhibited a dominant performance against Mount Mansfield, winning 8 to 1. Lanah Quong led the way with an impressive four goals and one assist, supported by Violet Clough’s contribution of one goal and three assists. On the other side, Mount Mansfield struggled to hold back Rice’s attack, despite Abby Hussey scoring their lone goal.

The South Burlington team also excelled, recording a decisive 8 to 0 victory against Burlington. Elise Knoth and Jill Coucke each netted one goal and provided two assists to help elevate their team’s score. BFA-Fairfax had a solid outing as well, defeating Richford 6 to 2, with Paige Cargill scoring twice.

Field Hockey Showdowns

In field hockey, Essex showed persistence, edging out Mount Abraham in a tight matchup 2 to 1 after two overtimes. Hazel Fry not only scored the equalizer but also assisted Bria Breckage in scoring the winning goal.

Volleyball Action

Volleyball matches were equally exciting. Essex triumphed over South Burlington in straight sets, 3 to 0, with Riley Austin leading the team with 11 kills and 13 digs. The Enosburg team also claimed victory, defeating Montpelier 3 to 1 in a hard-fought match.

Upcoming Matches

Looking ahead, teams are gearing up for more thrilling encounters. White River Valley will face Randolph this upcoming weekend, while Hartford is scheduled to take on Randolph on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Fans and families are encouraged to attend and support their local athletes.

For coaches and representatives wishing to report scores, please email results to the designated sports email as soon as possible, as it helps keep the community informed and engaged with high school sports.
