Fall Sports Kick Off in Vermont High Schools

As the leaves begin to change, Vermont high schools are diving headfirst into the 2024 fall sports season. Student athletes across the state are showcasing their talent in sports such as soccer, field hockey, volleyball, golf, and cross-country running. Here’s a recap of this week’s action.

Field Hockey Highlights

The University of Vermont field hockey team edged out UC Davis in a thrilling overtime match, winning 3-2. Marie Dijkstra was the star of the game, scoring two goals, including the game-winner with just 42 seconds left in the first overtime period. Other notable performances included goals from Meg Weyer and assists from Sophia Drees and Sophia Lefranc. The goalie, Ila Gunner, made four crucial saves to help secure the victory.

In another match, South Burlington dominated Rutland with an impressive score of 8-0. Sawyer Bailey led the charge with three goals. The team controlled the game from the beginning, leading 3-0 at halftime, while Rutland’s goalie Sammy Cacace made 27 saves to keep the game competitive.

Soccer Scores

Soccer action was just as intense. Essex blanked Mount Mansfield 5-0 with Bella Delphia scoring twice. Burlington defeated St. Johnsbury 5-1, led by Glenna Westbrook’s two goals. Colchester also shined, handing BFA-St. Albans a 5-1 defeat, with Brinlee Gilfillan scoring twice for Colchester.

Volleyball Updates

In volleyball, South Burlington swept Mount Mansfield 3-0 in a tightly contested match, winning with scores of 25-23, 25-17, and 25-20, while Essex also secured a solid 3-0 victory over Burlington.

Looking Ahead

As we move into next week, several exciting matches are on the schedule. Teams will face off at various locations, including U-32 at Spaulding and Harwood against Missisquoi on Saturday. With so much action happening, it’s clear that this fall season will be one to remember for Vermont high school sports.
