Fall Sports Season Kicks Off in Vermont

This week marked the start of the 2024 fall sports season in Vermont, with several impressive performances showcased across various sports including soccer, field hockey, volleyball, and more. Teams are already stepping up, setting the stage for an exciting season ahead.

High School Soccer Highlights

In soccer, Rice High School took a commanding victory against Essex, finishing the game at 4-0. Violet Clough and Kate Larkin led the charge for Rice, each scoring 2 goals, while Maryann Nunn contributed with 3 assists. Notably, all of Rice’s goals came from penalty corners, and this game marked their first on the new turf field.

South Burlington dominated Middlebury with an astounding score of 8-0. The team displayed remarkable teamwork as multiple players entered the goal tally, including Oli Roy, who netted 2 goals, and Grace Landerman, who had 1 goal and 1 assist.

Field Hockey Action

In the world of field hockey, Fair Haven claimed a strong victory over Woodstock winning 5-0. Leigha Kretzer was outstanding, scoring 3 goals and delivering 2 assists. This match also celebrated the 25th career shutout for goalkeeper Kate Hadwen, highlighting her defensive prowess.

Volleyball Match Results

The volleyball courts saw Essex defeat Burlington 3-0, with impressive individual performances from Hannah Knickerbocker who racked up 5 kills and 17 digs. In another exciting match, Colchester also triumphed over Montpelier with a score of 3-0, claimed by Ally Whelihan’s outstanding play which included 4 aces and 5 kills.

As the season continues, coaches and team representatives are encouraged to report scores and highlights as quickly as possible for continued coverage. Fans eagerly look forward to the upcoming games scheduled for the week, including matches involving Champlain Valley and Mount Mansfield.
