NEWBERRY, S.C. — On what started as an ordinary Monday afternoon, the peaceful atmosphere of Wilson Road was shattered by a violent altercation that left the community shaken. A shooting incident occurred in the 1200 block involving two men who were reportedly exchanging gunfire, and it all stemmed from a tense personal situation.

What Happened

According to the Newberry Police Chief, Kevin Goodman, the chaos began when a man recognized as the ex-boyfriend of a female victim spotted her in a vehicle with another man. This triggered an explosive reaction. The ex-boyfriend, feeling threatened or perhaps jealous, drew his weapon and opened fire on the couple’s car. Imagine just driving around and suddenly being caught in the crossfire—it’s a terrifying thought!

As fear filled the air, the male passenger in the victim’s vehicle didn’t hesitate to jump into action. He exited the car and retaliated by returning fire towards the ex-boyfriend. This dramatic moment unfolded with a 1-year-old child present in the ex-boyfriend’s vehicle, raising serious concerns about the potential for a tragic outcome.

The Aftermath

Fortunately, the victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was promptly taken to Prisma Health Richland Hospital by the Newberry County EMS. It’s a relief to hear that the injuries were not more severe, but it still highlights the seriousness of such incidents.

Shortly after the shooting, deputies from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office acted quickly. They apprehended the suspect at a nearby convenience store on Wilson Road, just about 1.4 miles from where the shooting took place. The suspect was driving a white vehicle, and the arrest was carried out without any further incidents, thankfully keeping the community safe from ongoing danger.

Ongoing Investigation

As of now, police officials report that two individuals are in custody, with charges expected to be announced by Tuesday morning, November 26, 2024. While residents are eager to learn more about the identities and circumstances surrounding the involved parties, authorities have yet to make that information public.

Chief Goodman reassured the community that this event is being treated as an isolated incident. He emphasized that there is no ongoing threat, which is certainly a relief for the residents of Newberry. It’s important for folks to feel secure in their neighborhoods, and knowing that the situation is under control helps restore a sense of safety.

Community Response

The community’s reaction to this alarming event has been one of shock and concern. Mindful of how quickly everyday life can become dangerous, many residents are expressing their gratitude towards the swift actions of law enforcement. Chief Goodman expressed his appreciation, stating, “I would like to thank the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and the community for their assistance with this incident.”

As the investigation continues, many are hoping for a swift resolution to shed light on what exactly transpired on that fateful afternoon. In the meantime, everyone is reminded about the importance of staying vigilant and looking out for each other in their neighborhoods.
