Weather Wonders in Newberry: A Day of Learning at Reuben Elementary

Newberry, SC, was buzzing with excitement this week as the WACH FOX Weather School made a special visit to Reuben Elementary! Chief Meteorologist Taylor Kanost took some time out of his busy schedule to spend a delightful day with the enthusiastic 3rd graders who were absolutely eager to learn about weather phenomena. This was not just any ordinary school day; it was a day filled with fascinating weather facts and thrilling discussions!

Curiosity in the Classroom

The energy in the classroom was palpable as soon as Taylor stepped in. The kids, full of curiosity, had prepared their own set of questions about all things weather. It’s no wonder they were bursting with inquiries like, “Would baseball size hail hurt you?” and “What should you do if a category 5 hurricane is coming toward your house?” These questions hit the hearts and minds of the students, showing just how much they were thinking about the impact of weather on their lives.

Taylor was more than happy to dive into these serious subjects. He explained that hail can indeed cause serious injuries, especially if it’s as big as a baseball! Luckily, he reassured the students that such occurrences are rare. It is always wise to stay indoors when a hailstorm is brewing, and that is an important lesson for everyone!

Storm Safety 101

Another hot topic was tornadoes. The students wanted to know, “Should you go in a ditch if a tornado is coming for you?” With a serious yet encouraging tone, Taylor explained the best safety practices when a tornado alarms go off. He stressed the importance of not staying in a vehicle or a mobile home during a tornado, but instead finding a low area like a ditch or a basement to take cover. It was important, he said, to keep your head covered and stay low to the ground until the danger passes.

Understanding Hurricanes

As for hurricanes, Taylor shared the ins and outs of how they form and what makes them so powerful. He talked about how these massive storms can lead to catastrophic weather, impacting both land and people. The kids in the audience learned that when a hurricane approaches, staying informed and having a safety plan is crucial. It was fascinating to see their faces as the seriousness of hurricane safety sank in!

Making Learning Fun

But it wasn’t all serious talk; Taylor made sure to sprinkle in plenty of fun facts and tidbits throughout the session. The kids learned about how everyday weather works and even got to participate in a few interactive demonstrations that showcased how clouds form and why rain occurs. Turning weather learning into a hands-on experience enabled the students to grasp these complex concepts in a wonderfully engaging way!

A Heartfelt Thank You

The day wrapped up with plenty of laughs and high-fives. Taylor thanked the amazing 3rd grade students and dedicated teachers at Reuben Elementary for their inquisitive minds and enthusiastic spirit. It was clear that everyone left feeling a little wiser about the weather around them.
