Winter Storm Watch Issued for Central South Carolina and East Central Georgia

Winter Storm Watch Issued for Central South Carolina and East Central Georgia

Columbia, SC – On Wednesday, the National Weather Service (NWS) made an early call regarding the weather, issuing a Winter Storm Watch that will take effect this Friday at 7 a.m. and will last until Saturday at 7 a.m. With a mixture of heavy precipitation expected, locals are bracing for the effects that winter weather can bring.

What to Expect

As the weather rolls in, residents can expect total snow and sleet accumulations reaching up to a half-inch, alongside possible ice accumulations ranging from one-tenth to two-tenths of an inch. These weather conditions are likely to occur across portions of east central Georgia and central South Carolina.

In their advisory, the NWS cautioned, “Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday morning and evening commutes.” So, if you have plans to travel this Friday, it might be wise to rethink your trips or mix in a bit of extra time for your travels. The forecast hints that it could be a bumpy ride!

Stay Informed

The NWS encourages everyone to monitor the latest forecasts for updates as conditions can change quickly. Getting the most recent information can make all the difference when it comes to planning your safety.

Safety First!

It’s important to remember that, nationwide, weather-related vehicle crashes unfortunately kill over 6,000 people and injure more than 480,000 people each year. This staggering number showcases the importance of taking caution when venturing out during inclement weather. If you absolutely must drive in snowy or icy conditions, keep your safety a top priority by slowing down.

When the temperature hovers around freezing, there’s a good chance that ice is present on the roadways. Pay attention to your surroundings and adjust your driving accordingly. Also, be cautious of ice accumulating on power lines or tree branches; the added weight can cause them to break and fall, creating hazardous situations for drivers.

Driving Tips for Winter Weather

Here are some essential tips to keep in mind if you need to be on the road during the storm:

  • Check your vehicle: Make sure your car is winter-ready with appropriate tires and windshield wipers.
  • Know your route: If you must go out, choose a travel path that has fewer trees and power lines to reduce the risk of falling debris.
  • Stay alert: Always be on the lookout for icy patches, especially bridges and overpasses which tend to freeze first.
  • Never touch downed power lines: If you see one, keep your distance and call emergency services immediately.

Winter weather can throw a curveball into our daily lives, and while it’s a time for some excitement about the snow, it’s vital to prioritize safety. Keep an eye on the weather, plan ahead, and stay safe!

Remember, we’re all in this together during wintery conditions. Stay warm, check on your neighbors, and hang in there — spring will be here before we know it!
